Dr Smajkic’s inspiring journey began in Bosnia, where he graduated from the University of Sarajevo School of Medicine just as the Bosnian War erupted. Assigned as a frontline vascular surgeon, he operated under extreme conditions, saving hundreds of lives and offering emotional support to those traumatized by war. In 1994, Dr. Smajkic arrived in Chicago as a refugee. Soon after, he became a therapist and mental health counselor working with traumatised refugees, survivors of genocide and ethnic cleansing from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Smajkic’s dedication led to a research collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Department of Psychiatry, working alongside Drs. Stevan Weine and Ivan Pavkovic on pioneering studies into post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Smajkic completed his postgraduate training at Rush University Medical Center. He served as an attending physician at Rush University Medical Center, was director of Consultation services at RUMC and Christ Hospital, and also directed the Child Psychiatry Unit at River Edge Hospital. Dr. Smajkic currently serves as Medical Director and CEO of Chicago Child Psychiatry Associates. Dr. Smajkic is also a faculty member at the Center for Global Health at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. In his growing private practice, he integrates psychopharmacology, behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy into personalized treatment plans focused on the well-being of children, adolescents, and young adults.
