Chicago Psychiatrist, Dr. Amer Smajkic Awarded As IL Top Doc

Dr. Smajkic is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist with over 25 years of experience treating mental health conditions like anxiety, ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, and developmental issues. Dr. Smajkic provides specialized psychiatric care utilizing psychopharmacology, behavioral therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Smajkic’s powerful journey began in Bosnia, where he graduated medical school at the University of Sarajevo before the Bosnian War broke out. Assigned as a frontline vascular surgeon, he persevered through harrowing conditions to save hundreds of lives through battle surgeries and personal counseling.
He arrived in Chicago as a Refugee of War sponsored by St. Luke’s Episcopalian Church in March, 1994. For the first few months, he helped other refugees and their families establish themselves in Chicago. In June of 1994, he turned his outreach work into a profession by becoming the first mental health counselor in a newly formed Refugee Mental Health program for Bosnians. In 1995, he established a professional academic relationship with the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Illinois at Chicago, with Drs. Stevan Weine and Ivan Pavkovic as mentors. Under their leadership, he participated in numerous research projects involving Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dr. Smajkic previously served as an attending physician and clinical instructor at Rush University Medical Center, where he provided inpatient child/adolescent psychiatric care and training medical learners.
His current areas of clinical interest include anxiety and mood disorders in youth, with an emphasis on prevention, early detection, and effective treatment.
Dr. Smajkic’s remarkable experiences have cultivated an exceptional understanding of violence’s impacts and trauma-informed care delivery. He is passionate about educating fellow professionals while continuing to advance mental health care for all.
